K&K Driving Academy and its owner Ms. Dorothea Boltney have been teaching low-income women to drive in the Cape Town suburb of Atlantis since 2003. With increased mobility often a must for a woman's economic independence and empowerment, more and more women are seeking the instruction needed to obtain drivers' licenses. K&K is meeting this growing demand. K&K Driving Academy enjoys a well-established reputation in Atlantis, offering both individuals clients and companies a variety of drivers' education courses.
In 2006, RISA awarded K&K Driving Academy with a small business capacity-building grant of $2,500. This grant helped K&K purchase a computer and color printer. The new equipment allows the company to computerize key tasks that were formerly done manually- or not at all. Before receiving a grant from RISA, K&K Driving Academy could not meet the rise in demand for its services. With this new technology, K&K is growing its client base to meet current demand..
RISA's grant is also helping K&K diversify in to new markets that include -
• Drivers' education programs at local high schools,
• Teaching "defensive driving" to taxi drivers and drivers of business delivery vehicles.
The technology provided by RISA's small business capacity-building grant is helping K&K expand and meet rising demand. K&K's growth will create new jobs and opportunities within the company and within the larger community as well.
